Ben and Noe's Down Under Adventure Home
1 September 2008 : Second Semester
- Sorry for the long silence, we're getting more and more busy!
- We had a great week-long holiday in Melbourne staying with the families of our friends. Melbourne is beautiful!
- 2nd semester started on July 21, and now we are in week 6, the half-way point of the semester already!
- I (Noe) am working 2 afternoons a week at CNEC (a Christian sponsorship agency) as a sponsorship coordinator. I love working there!
- But it does take 8 hours away from studying, and I am finding it very hard to keep up with the essay deadlines.
- Ben and I are doing the Alpha Marriage Course through our church. It's is transforming the way we communicate and show love to one another! I highly recommend it. The 3 course meal they provide is quite lovely as well!
- Ben just sprained his ankle playing soccer last Friday. Please pray that it heals well and quickly.
21 June 2008 : Final Exams!
- This has been the toughest semester yet! 8 essays!
- This coming week is exams week - the end of our 1st semester of our 2nd year at college.
- We've been studying really hard! We have exams for 3 classes - Old Testament (Pentateuch), New Testament (Romans), and Theology (Knowledge of God)
- Please pray that we Pass everything!!
- After exams we have 3 weeks of holiday
- Right after exams finish we will take a week long trip to Melbourne with some friends our ours.
- When we get back, we'll start preparing for 2nd semester, learning the Greek vocabulary for 1 Corinthians and the book of Hebrews
- We'll have lots of admin and errands to run as well, like paying Aussie Taxes for the first time!
- Praise God - Noe will work 1 day a week next semester at CNEC - a Christian Sponsorship Org (similar to World Vision).
- I really like this organization, and it's within walking distance from home!
- It shouldn't interfere too much with full-time study.
- For next year, we are hoping to stay in Australia, and have Ben try to finish the M.Div degree. So Noe will try to find a job, since we will run out of money by then.
- Please pray for a job for me that:
- is interesting,
- requires more reponsibility than just being an "admin assistant"
- that pays Ben's tuition and rent for the both of us
- that has to do with int'l humanitarian aid
- or mission work
- Thanks for being intersted in our lives, and for your prayers!
7 April 2008 : Mission Week!
- We are currently on Mission for a week, working with a Enlish/Korean church just a 15 minutes walk away in Burwood. Our team (of 14 students and one professor) is getting a chance to practice different parts of church and neighborhood ministry, and learn how this multicultural church works together to glorify God in their neighborhood.
- It's been really fun so far and lots of work too!
- We love the Korean food!
- Ben and I specifically are:
- Giving our testamonies in church in the English and Korean services
- Noe's playing in the worship team for church services
- We're playing Pirates in 5 pirate skits for a kids club (a 5 day afternoon program that we're running.)
- We also did a puppet show together for the kids club
- Participating in ESL classes put on by the church
- Letterboxing
- Noe will be teaching massage at a Ladies Pampering night
- Please pray that the children and parents that take part in our kids club will learn about God, and start coming to the church, if they don't already. And ultimately that they will come to know Christ!
27 March 2008
- Hello friends and family! I hope you all are doing well!
- Ben and I are so busy with assignments and we're feeling the stress of it!
- I was going to try to do some temping work during our two-week holidays in April, however I think I will need all that time to write essays!
- But thanks be to God, he has provided for us greatly through our generous family. Several of our relatives (on Ben side mostly, but my side as well!) have decided to send us support, which will really help us out!
- Thank you, family! We really appreciate it!
- This takes a lot of pressure off of me to earn the rest of our tuition for this year through massage and admin temping.
27 March 2008
7 March 2008
- We just turned in our first exegetical paper today!
 - That's why we haven't updated the website in a while, we've been really busy doing research.
- We have 8 assignments to turn in this semester, where in previous semesters, we only had 4!
- Please pray that we survive! Everyone says 2nd year is the busiest, and we're realizing why.
- We feel like we're constantly studying! And this is only the 4th week of the semester!
- The bird in the picture is the neighbor's pet bird called "Bird-o" They let him out in the yard everyday and he comes over a lot to play with Noe, and she loves it!
- Ben chipped his tooth and had to go to the dentist, but thanks to God, we go to a Christian dentist who gave us a huge discount as Bible college students!
- Noe is enjoying her 2 cross-cultural ministry classes, and is getting more and more excited about cultural research.
- Ben's favorite courses are Romans, and Pentateuch.
Feb. 6, 2008 = School is back in session!
- Our classes officially start up again this Friday
- Noe is starting to play the drums in our church this year, St. James Anglincan Church.
- Ben is excited for weekly soccer to start up again.
- Noe is applying for a part-time student job at the college library. Please pray that I get it!
6. Februar 2008 = Der Unterricht fängt wieder an!
2007 is History!
Year-end Review:
It's been a good year for us. Thank you for your friendship and prayers and for following us along on this adventure!
This year has just flown by so quickly, yet I am amazed at how much has happened, how many new wonderful people we've gotten to know, and how much God has taught us! We started this year enjoying precious time with my brother's family in Hawaii before we headed south to Sydney.
COLLEGE
In Sydney at SMBC we moved in with 8 other couples into athe cramped yet cozy couples housing with 3 by 7 meters all to our selves. These people became our family away from home and taught us all about life as a Christian Aussie, Austrian, and Indian, and they showed us the ropes as to how to survive seminary.
Our courses were eye-opening, inspiring, intellectually challenging, encouraging, and humbling as we realized how much we didn't know about the most important person in our lives - our God. Through these 10 months of intense study, hours of research, writing papers, reading and taking notes, our hunger to know more about our God, his love for all mankind and for the tools to serve him with has grown.
HOBBIES Asside from study, Ben enjoyed the weekly soccer student games in nearby park, and has gone to watch several professional Aussie sporting events. Noe played the drums in chapel and for a couple of public Christian conferences that our school hosted.
We took part in a week of mission to a church in North Sydney which allowed us to experiment with new forms of church ministry and evangelism.
WORK God blessed Noe with a flourishing massage clientel among the female students, which she enjoyed just as much as those being massaged! Andmore recently, God has opened up a new avenue of income for Noe through temping as an administrative assistant during school holidays.
FREE STUFF!
He provided us with a free car, lovingly loaned to us by our friends Gus and Christy, and now we are moved into a 2-room Granny flat one block away from campus, with all the furniture and kitchen tools we need, provided by our school and friends who have given us stuff! God is so good. We are just humbled that He has freely given us so much, we don't deserve it! We had to move because they're knocking down our beloved old couples dorm to build more and better one in their place, so the college put us in this larger, more private house, which we're very pleased with. (Unfortunately that's not free, but we're still happy about it!)
VACATION!!! We were able to explore New South Wales a little, venturing out to Port Stephens, Hunter Valley (wine country!), Gerringong, Geroa, and the Blue Mountains. With help from our family, we went to a Jones family reunion in Hawaii in June. And in December Noe was able to go to Orlando, Florida to see one of her best friends, Rachel Schalm get married, and thereafter, both of us went to New Zealand for 12 days with friends from Switzerland.
Forecasts for 2008: This year we will be taking a big risk. As we watch our bank account empty, and literally trust in God to provide for us, our faith will be stretched, . It's a scary, yet exciting place to be, knowing that if we make it through financially, it's only by God's grace and power.
Both of us will be studying full-time, and Noe will try to pick up temping jobs during the holidays, and hopefully massaging.
We're excited to dig into studying Romans in the original Greek and exploring the intricacies of the Petateuch, among other things (click on "Class Schedule" to see what we'll be studying).
And most importantly, we're praying that God will shape us into the servants he wants us to be for his glory, and we are asking him to show us the next step after this year. Should we stay and have Ben finish the 3rd year of the Masters of Divinity while Noe works? Or should we go back to our previous professions? And if so, where?
Anyways, please continue to pray for us, and keep checking this site for updates, blogs and pictures. We'd love to hear from you too! Please write to us, call, or drop by and let us know how you are doing and how we can pray for you!!
Love, Ben and Noe
January 6, 2008!!
- We're back in Sydney now!
- Noe is working for the Ministry of Transport for the whole month of January!! Praise God for this much needed income!!
- I'm doing data entry work
- New Zealand was beautiful! Our 12-day mobile home trip with our friends, the Hueslers was an adventure in this amazingly untouched country where they filmed the Lord of the Rings
- We are also now living in a new little 2-roomed granny flat one block from campus. (But we're still using the same mailing address as before)
- It's still small, but cozy and we love it!
- God's provided us with all the furniture and kitchen tools that we need!
November 19, 2007
- One Exam to go tomorrow!
- This has been a tough exam season. For some reason, we really felt unprepared going into exams, and we probably had less time to study. But we both think we'll pass all our classes at least.
- We're looking forward to a break from studies!
- Then we pack up, and in a week, while Noe will be in Florida for Rachel's wedding, Ben will be moving into our new granny flat 2 blocks away. Poor Ben has to move by himself!
- Kehau, Noe's sister is probably in labor now, giving birth to her 4 child, (her first girl).
October 19, 2007
- Noe's going to Rachel's wedding on Dec. 1st!!! I'll be in Orlando, Nov 26-Dec 3!!
- Thank you for your prayers that I would find enough work so that I could afford to go. And thank you, God, for allowing me to go!!!
- See the coming blog to learn more about the job finding process, but basically I'm doing temporary admin work through 3 temping agencies during school holidays.
- 4 and a half weeks of school left!
- We're really busy this month working on a research paper on Micah, and then we have to study for final exams.
- We're moving off campus in November!
- Since they will tear down our housing to build new couples housing, the college has offered us a place to live in a little grandmothers flat/attachment to one of the girl's student houses a block away from campus.
- Thanks to God, it's still nice and close so we'll be able to eat on campus, and hopefully I'll still be able to carry on my massage business there.
- We will miss our friends an neighbors in Trowell Court though. It's really been like a nice big Family here in the couple's housing!
- Summer Vacation: December - January
- Nov 26 - Dec 3 Noe goes to Orlando for the wedding
- Dec 7 - 19 We go to New Zealand with Stefan and Stephanie Huesler (good friends from Switzerland)

September 6
- Thank you for your prayers for my job search and plane ticket! God is providing many opportunities! Please keep praying that God´s will be done in this area of our lives.
- Job Search Update:
- 1 interview down, 2 to go, in next 7 days in the massage industry
- Still need to set up an interview for an admin position thru a friend in my Bible study.
- I applied for retail work at the near by mall
- It's exciting as I look forward to having a job actually. At college, I don't really feel like I'm fulfilling the command to be "in the world, but not of the world." We currently have no contact with people of other belief systems. So this could be such an opportunity.

- One of my best friends, Rachel Schalm is engaged!!!
- I desparately want to fly to Orlando in December for her wedding, and to see my new niece, however, I need to think of creative ways to raise money for the ticket, since we need all our existing money to continue studying at SMBC for a 2nd year.
- Please pray that I receive my work visa, and that I can find temorpary jobs during our vacation time to earn enough $ for it.
- Do you have any creative ideas how I can raise that money? (About $2,000)

- This is when we learn the most from our courses, and we're hoping we really do learn it for our lives, and not just for the exams
- We're slowly learning more about the way Aussie's tick. It's amazing how different they are to Americans, even though we share the same language. The more I understand them, the more I like them.
